Judge Orla Crowe explained that he used the forged passport to open a bank account, obtain an ‘M10 form,’ and submit an application to the Department of Social Protection. He was then granted €43,715 in state benefits.
Using the false Afghan passport also enabled him to travel from Ireland to Pakistan multiple times to visit his wife and children, reports Breaking News.
The court heard that when the passport expired, Akbar voluntarily informed his bank, saying he needed a genuine passport to visit a seriously ill family member.
His bank then alerted the gardaí, reports Breaking News.
In 2023, Akbar discovered that he was actually entitled to the same benefit he had fraudulently claimed, and he is now receiving it legitimately under his real name.
The judge took into account that he had no prior criminal record and led a modest life, sharing a room with three other adults, despite holding employment. His family in Pakistan is reported to face financial hardship, reports Breaking News.
“It’s a very unusual case,” remarked Judge Crowe. “He shouldn’t have done it by obtaining a false passport,” reports Breaking News.
She handed down a two-year prison sentence but suspended it entirely on the condition of good behaviour for four years.
“This will hang over him for that period of four years,” she said, reports Breaking News.
