The Minister for Health Simon Harris has officially signed legislation that will allow access to medicinal cannabis.
Under the new pilot scheme which will last for five years patients with specific illnesses such epilepsy and multiple sclerosis will be now allowed to access the Medical Cannabis Access Programme.
Although the treatment will have to be prescribed by a medical professionals, patients will now for the first time be able to access such treatment if it is deemed that standard treatment methods are not effective.
The new legislation was officially passed following two years of planning within Dáil.
