After a short respite, the price of a litre of petrol or diesel has shot up by 7c at the pumps in recent days.
The average price of a litre of petrol in forecourts around the country is 135.7c, and 129.3c for diesel. These prices represent a sharp increase on last month’s figures of 128.4c and 122.4c, respectively.
July 2014 marked the cusp of petrol prices last year. Back then, a litre of unleaded cost 157.4c.
A steady weakening of the euro against the dollar (the official petrol trading currency) is being blamed for the hike.
60% of the price of petrol goes straight into the Government’s coffers in tax.
