A new vacant home levy is being considered by the government as means of alleviating the homelessness crisis

After the number of people homeless in the country topped 8,000, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar is under more pressure than ever to resolve the quickly, spiraling crisis.

The new measure would be a way of incentivising people with unoccupied properties to enter the market, either though renting or selling their property thus taking some pressure of the already extremely hard-pressed housing supply.

Even is this measure, which has significant opposition, were to be implemented it is not expected to have a very significant impact on the state of homelessness in the country.
