A Taoiseach’s fantasy: Enda Kenny’s dramatic tale of army units guarding ATMs proves to be an unsubstantiated fiction

Our hapless Taoiseach recently claimed that he was poised and ready to call in the Irish Army to protect ATMs at the height of the financial crisis, conjuring images of mobs of panicked punters rushing to the banks to withdraw their money before it was too late, only to be beaten back by soldiers standing fast.

He recently made the bombastic claims while speaking at a political conference in Madrid, Spain.

However, when pressed on the matter, he admitted that “he had not received a specific briefing on the issue”, despite his earlier claims about being advised to do so during the crisis.

According to Kenny, the Central Bank Governor, Patrick Honohan, had told him that it was almost time to call in army units and introduce capital controls to avoid a run on the banks.

But no minutes of such meeting, if it ever did take place, were kept.

Sinn Fein has gone on the attack and accused the Taoiseach of telling “tall tales.”
