An act of human kindness: Anonymous donor helps baby Zoe to fly on a medical flight to the US by giving €30,000

A heart warming story to end the day with.

Baby Zoe came into this world almost four months ahead of her time. Her mother Jenny went into labour at 30,000ft while on a flight to the US, causing the flight to be diverted to Dublin, where Jenny was rushed to Rotunda Hospital.

Born weighing just 1 lb 13 oz, she would not be able to withstand the long flight back to the US, thus forcing the family to stay in Dublin. In fact, doctors said that Zoe would not be able to go home for at least a year, leaving the family in a situation where they could neither afford to stay in Dublin nor go home.

The only way in which Zoe would be allowed to fly home would be on board a medical flight, but at a cost of over €60,000, it would be prohibitive.

A GoFundMe appeal was set up by Zoe’s family to help raise the necessary funds to pay for the medical flight. By yesterday, just over half the required money had been raised, and a last minute appeal on the Ray Darcy show prompted an anonymous donor to pay the shortfall.

Now, baby Zoe will finally go home in a safe environment, with medical staff monitoring her condition all the way.

Upon hearing the outcome of the story, Ray Darcy said he was “proud” to be Irish.
