Concerns raised by Asthma Society of Ireland about people using inhalers which could lead to asthma-related death

The Asthma Society of Ireland has expressed extreme concern as to the number of people who use an inhaler for asthma are overusing it.

It’s believed that people using inhalers to relieve their condition could be linked with severe exacerbation of the condition and asthma-related death.

So-called reliever inhalers are what most people recognise as the blue inhalers. They’re used to widen the airways and reduce asthma symptoms in the short term. They’re widely regarded as the main fight against an asthma attack.

But experts are saying that some users are overusing their inhalers and are concerned at the amount of people to rely too heavily on the inhalers believing that using 12 or more reliever inhalers a year is an indication that someone is at risk of an asthma-related death.

If people are using up to 12 inhalers a year, they’re advised to have a conversation with the doctor about trying to lessen their use and using other medications as an alernative.
