Whilst Ireland has 14 people ICU this week, RTE science correspondent George Lee said on their 6.1 evening broadcast “Be under no illusion, these numbers are going to grow” with regards to Delta infection rates.
Meanwhile, one out of every two cases is the “Delta variant”.
Transmission of the coronavirus is accelerating in Portugal, which on Monday recorded about a thousand new cases, with particular incidence in Lisbon and the Algarve. In this southern region of the country, where Delta is already predominant, the Portuguese government has closed schools in five municipalities to prevent further contagion.
The Delta variant accounts for 96 % of the new confirmed cases in the UK, according to health officials, who report a nearly 50 % increase in transmission in the last week.
