Breaking: Gardai in Dublin are questioning a man in his 30s over the alleged female genital mutilation of a 2-yr-old girl

A man in his 30s is being interviewed by gardaí over the alleged female genital mutilation of a young girl.

A Somalian national was arrested in Crumlin, Dublin, on Thursday at his home where he lives with his wife and two daughters under the age of 5.

It is believed the arrest under the Criminal Justice (Female Genital Mutilation) Act 2012 is one the first arrests of such a crime in Ireland.

Garda forensic teams combed the first floor apartment this afternoon. Specialist detectives carried out a detailed examination of the properly today.

It’s believed a 2-yr-old girl is currently receiving treatment in hospital in connection to the incident.

Female genital mutilation (FGM), also known as female cutting, is common practice in at least 30 – mainly African – countries, but is a criminal offence in Ireland.

If convicted, the man could face 14 yrs in prison and a €10,000 fine.
