Cervical Check campaigner Vicky Phelan speaks out against violence to women in the aftermath of Ashling Murphy’s murder

Cervical Check campaigner Vicky Phelan has spoken about the tragic killing of Ashling Murphy, tweeting about she was always fearful of an attach when out running.

According to the Irish Mirror, Vicky highlighted the fears that many women experience when they are out running. She spoke about how she used to hold a key between her fingers, ready to defend herself against an attacker:

“Each and every time, I had a key between my fingers ready to attack, I was constantly scanning my surroundings and made notes of what men were wearing, how tall they were etc. in case any of them attacked me. I never took the same route twice and I never wore short shorts.”

She also said that she feels like one of the lucky ones, a woman who was never attacked or followed. She said that Ashling had paid the “ultimate price” for going out running on her own, calling for an end to violence against women:

“This has to END! RIP Ashling.”
