A wedding ring lost by a Cork couple in the late 1980s has been unexpectedly returned to them, just months before their 50th wedding anniversary, reports The Mirror.
The ring, engraved with the names Madeline and Pat and dated November 26th 1977, had been found in Cobh decades ago by John A.
Murphy’s late father, but was later forgotten in a box until it was rediscovered during a recent house clear-out.
Mr Murphy shared a photograph of the ring on a local Facebook page, which quickly led to its identification and return. Within two hours, a page administrator—who was abroad in Spain at the time—helped connect him with the original owners, reports The Mirror.
Speaking on Cork’s 96FM Opinion Line, Mr Murphy said the ring had effectively travelled “from Cobh to Cork to Spain and back again” through social media links.
The story took an unexpected twist when it emerged that the two families were already connected, with Pat’s late father having worked alongside Mr Murphy’s father at Irish Steel, reports The Mirror.
The ring is currently being held by Mr Murphy’s 90-year-old mother, ahead of its return to the couple. Madeline had already replaced the original ring years ago, meaning the original and replacement may now be reunited as the couple approach their golden anniversary, reports The Mirror.
