Court hears man ignored child while its mother lay dead in the apartment

A long-term drinker who disregarded his daughter, 11, when she begged him to save her mother, who had been dead in their flat for up to four days while under Covid restrictions, has been sentenced to prison, reports RTE.

According to testimony given in court, the man kept drinking even after the widow passed away. Both parents were strong consumers. After her mother fell, the youngster cried out to her father, begging for assistance.

The daughter tried to take care of the mother, who was suffering from end-stage alcoholism, for almost four days, giving her food and blankets, till she passed away and the kid went to the neighbours for assistance, reports RTE.

The father informed gardaĆ he did not recall these incidents. He is now sober and does not look after his daughter.

He claimed to have changed “from a human to a monster” due to drunkenness.

At Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, the 45-year-old male entered a guilty plea to two counts of child abuse pertaining to dates in 2020. He has never been convicted before. For these offences, the maximum term is seven years in jail.

Restrictions on reporting are in place in this instance to preserve the child’s identity.

According to Judge Martin Nolan, the only true question in this case was whether the accused should have been sentenced to jail for his daughter’s negligence, reports RTE.
