Crowd funding has raised more than €10,000 for a “gay cafe” in Waterford despite the gay community there claiming Waterford is a safe place

As reported on WLR, the gay community in Waterford have embarked on a so called “gay cafe” project to be “a space to help people accept their sexuality al lot sooner than otherwise.”

So far, the crowd funding campaign has raised over €10,000 in recent days.

Whilst there is an exclusive space for Waterford’s gay teens at the Manor Street Community Youth Project, a youth worker who runs the space says “ “It can be isolating when you’re on your own trying to figure things out, and if you’re in rural Ireland it can be even more so.” Reports WLR.

According to WLR, the ‘Gay Cafe’ idea was proposed by a young Waterford woman but, after heavy criticism online, partly due to concerns about a business plan, she has not responded to media requests.
