Delusional Varadkar’s promise to build 40,000 every year has been rubbished by Micheal Martin

We reported recently on the Fine Gael Ard Fheis where Leo Varadkar promised to build 40,000 homes very year. We asked was he a dreamer of just plain delusional?

Well here is what his partner in government and an opposition TD thinks:

According to the Irish Examiner, the Fianna Fail leader, Taoiseach Micheál Martin later distanced himself from sweeping promises made by Varadkar about ramping up house-building in Ireland.

Martin said “It was a Fine Gael ard fheis and as a party leader, of course, the Tánaiste is entitled to address and present the Fine Gael perspective on a variety of issues. The ESRI has said 33,000 (per year). Given that we’ve lost some houses in 2021, 5,000, maybe 6 to 7,000 in 2021, we need to build that up for the remainder of the decade.”

Catherine Murphy TD said of the Fine Gael Ard Fheis “There were so many spending commitments announced on Saturday (at the Fine Gael Ard Fheis) that Fine Gael delegates must have been checking to make sure that they were at the right event”.

Murphy demanded to know whether the promise of 40,000 homes was “a firm commitment” that the Government would stand over?
