Demands for harder sentences in the Republic after Turkish migrant gets 13 years in Belfast for raping and assaulting two teenage girls

There have been calls from social media users for tougher judicial sentences to be imposed in the Republic after a Judge sentenced a Turkish migrant to 13 years in prison assault on and rape of two teenagers in November 2017.

People are saying that there needs to be much harder and tougher sentences in the South to match the crime that evil perpetrators carry out.

According to the Irish Times, Orhan Kibar (43) lured two teenage girls, aged 18 and 19, he met outside Queen’s Students Union bar back to his apartment in early hours of November 24th 2017 and subsequently raped one before assaulting the other.

He was convicted of the rape and assault earlier this year but only sentenced on Thursday last, according to the Irish Times report.

Upon sentencing Judge Paul Ramsey QC commended the young women for their “resourcefulness and courage” in helping to bring the Turkish migrant to justice.

Judge Ramsey went on to say Kibar “deliberately targeted these two girls he knew were vulnerable by reason of their intoxication”. This case appears in the Irish Times here.
