Many on social media have been debating whether Denmark are right or not with their latest efforts for a full migrant evacuation back to their native Syria.

Danish authorities are the first European country to revoke residency permits of Syrian refugees as nearly 200 Syrians had there applications for renewal of temporary residency status denied since mid 2020 reports the Guardian.

Denmark carried out an in-depth analysis of the situation in Syria and found the security situation in some parts of Syria have “significantly improved”. In particular the areas in and around Damascus have been deemed safe for returning refugees.

The Danish Refugee Council disagrees with the decision to deem the Damascus area or any area in Syria. According to the Guardian, the Council said ““It is also pointless to remove people from the life they are trying to build in Denmark and put them in a waiting position without an end date… “

Syrian men are generally exempt from the new policy because the authorities recognise they are at risk of being drafted into the Syrian military or punished for evading conscription.

Syrian refugees have taken to social media, mainstream print media and national media to campaign to stay in Denmark.

What do you think? Have Danish authorities gone too far not far enough?
