Disgraceful: Covid laws had a horrendous effect on loved ones’ deaths, survey claims

According to a recent study conducted by the Irish Hospice Foundation, 70% of respondents said that the Covid-19 epidemic limits stopped their loved one from dying the way they would have wanted them to, reports RTE.

According to the ‘Time to Reflect’ study, people’s experiences with death, dying, and bereavement were significantly impacted by the epidemic.

Nearly 60% of respondents claimed that they had not had enough time to spend with a loved one before passing away.

Nearly 70% of respondents said that the pandemic limitations kept their loved one from dying the way they would have preferred. When’somewhat’ and ‘partly’ responses are included, the percentage increases to 81%, reports RTE.

Merely 50% of the participants stated that their cherished one received the necessary care towards the end of their life.

Between November 2021 and February 2022, 2,259 people completed the poll, and one in five of them identified as healthcare professionals.

More than half had lost a close relative or friend, reports RTE.

In the case of future public health catastrophes or crises, the study suggests giving person-centered, compassionate end-of-life care with family engagement first priority.

Future public health responses must be informed by the suggestions, according to Paula O’Reilly, Chief Executive of the IHF, reports RTE.
