A teenager is in an induced coma in hospital after a serious assault in which he was allegedly attacked and struck on the head with a block in Dublin, reports The Mirror.

The boy, understood to be in his teens, was found unresponsive with significant head injuries on Tolka Valley Road in Finglas on Sunday afternoon.

He was taken by emergency services to Beaumont Hospital, where he remains in a serious condition and is understood to be in an induced coma, reports The Mirror.

It is alleged that the teenager was lured to the area before being attacked, with a cinder block reportedly dropped onto his head during the incident.

Sources claim the victim was targeted over allegations he was involved in a suspected attempted break-in in the area in the days leading up to the assault, reports The Mirror.

Gardaí have recovered evidence suggesting the boy suffered serious blunt-force trauma, although the suspected weapon has not yet been located and examined.

There are also concerns the attack may have been recorded, while investigators believe the assault was carried out by individuals linked to a local dispute, reports The Mirror.

It is understood tensions in the area had already escalated following another assault on a young man the previous day, reports The Mirror.

Gardaí have warned of fears of possible reprisals amid ongoing tensions between local groups, reports The Mirror.

In a statement, An Garda Síochána said they are appealing for witnesses to the incident, which occurred at approximately 3.30pm on Sunday.

They confirmed that a juvenile was taken to Beaumont Hospital for treatment of serious injuries and urged anyone with information or footage, including dash-cam recordings from the area between 3pm and 4pm, to contact Finglas Garda Station or the Garda Confidential Line, reports The Mirror.
