A group of EU experts have said that Pfizer and BioNtech’s Covid-19 vaccine is still effective against the new strain of the virus detected in the UK.
Speaking following an emergency meeting this evening Germany’s Health Minister, Jens Spahn, said that there is no evidence to suggest that this new strain will impact the current Covid-19 vaccine.
Spahn’s comments were echoed by the French Government who also say that current evidence suggests that the current strain will not pose a threat to the current vaccine’s effectiveness.
The news comes after the UK reported a new strain of the virus which is said to be 70% more transmissible than the current strain.
Although experts from the EU have stated that the new strain is not a threat to the vaccine, it has been reported that EU leaders will hold another emergency meeting on Monday in order to discuss new measures to combat the spread of the new strain.
