Fishing for sympathy votes: Leo Varadkar says that Fine Gael has done “everything possible” to form a government

In a clear effort to portray themselves as saviors thwarted by ‘enemies of stability’, Fine Gael have said that they’ve “done everything possible’ to form a government, and that others are at fault now.

Acting minister Leo Varadkar has also said that a Fianna Fail-led minority government ‘is not viable.’

He said “It’s absolutely the case that Fine Gael is still open to talks with Fianna Fáil.”

“It’s a simple matter of arithmetic really,”

“You might as well talk about a Sinn Féin-led minority government, or one led by one of the smaller parties. It’s just not viable,” he said.

Mr Varadkar said that the party’s offer for full partnership in government still stands.

“That’s for three reasons,” he said. “First is that it’s in the best interests of the country, second that it respects the outcome of the election and third it would provide us with a stable and lasting government to help heal our fragmented society.”

“Fine Gael has done everything it possibly could in the last month to form a government,”

“We’re keen to get a Government in place for the country.”
