
GardaĆ have confirmed that more than 3,140 drivers were detected speeding during the June bank holiday roads policing operation, with three people having died in road accidents over the course of the weekend.
The operation, which began on Thursday and runs until Tuesday 2 June, has also seen more than 140 people arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, reports Breaking News.
One driver was clocked travelling at 149km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N7 at Brownsbarn in Dublin, while another was caught doing 102km/h in a 50km/h zone on the R183 at Dernaglug, Doohamlet in Co Monaghan.
A further motorist was detected at 120km/h in an 80km/h zone on the R458 at Caherpeak East in Kilcolgan, Co Galway. More than 340 drivers were also detected holding a mobile phone while driving or failing to wear a seatbelt, reports Breaking News.
The three fatalities during the operation have brought the total number of road deaths in Ireland in 2026 to 72.
An Garda SĆochĆ”na and the Road Safety Authority are urging all road users to support efforts to keep the roads safe this June bank holiday weekend, reports Breaking News.
GardaĆ said they are placing a particular emphasis on detecting those driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs throughout the operation.
“Motorists are reminded to always drive within the speed limit. Always wear a seatbelt and never use a mobile phone when driving. Keep distractions out of the vehicle and give your full attention to the road,” a Garda statement said, reports Breaking News.
