Gardaí to begin  roadside drug tests from March

The Department of Transport have confirmed that Gardaí have been equipped with devices to check for drugs such as cannabis, cocaine and heroin in motorists.

The roadside drug tests are due to commence from March.

Gardaí will also check for prescription drugs, but have said that motorists will not be penalised for taking medication as prescribed by a doctor or pharmacist.

Those found to be over legal limits will be taken to a Garda station to give a blood test. Refusal to comply could amount to a fine of up to €5,000 and six months in prison.
