Gardai warn public of broadband phishing scam that tricks people into handing over their personal details

The public have been warned to be on alert as fraudsters are targeting people in a sophisticated phishing scam which persuades them to hand over their personal details.

In public warning, Gardai say they have been made aware of a scam that involves fraudsters calling people pretending to be a broadband provider looking to address a supposed technical problem.

The scam which has been reportedly doing the rounds in recent weeks, apparently tricks customers into allowing the fraudsters to remotely access their PC or laptop before they ask for personal details such as banking details and credit/debit card information.

Gardaí say the public should be on alert and if they recieve a suspicious call they should contact their actual service provider via another phone immediately, in order to confirm if the call is genuine.

It is believed the fraudsters are targeting households after they obtain their name and address from certain websites they are registered too.
