Harris defends Ireland’s electoral system as being completely ‘valued and transparent’

As the protracted counting of the local and European elections finally came to an end, Taoiseach Simon Harris praised Ireland’s democratic system as transparent and valuable, reports Breaking News.

The process of filling all 14 seats across three European constituencies took six days.

Because computerised voting and counting techniques are not employed in our proportional representation system (the single transferable vote), votes are tallied by hand several times, reports Breaking News.

The Fine Gael leader stated that although the PRSTV system takes time, the State “values” the transparency it provides when speaking from Castlebar, County Mayo, overnight.

“I’m a very proud member of the European Union, a very proud citizen of Europe. I love the European Union, but we won’t be told by anyone else how to do our elections,” he said, reports Breaking News.

“Here in this country, we value our electoral system, PRSTV, and we value the peann luaidhe (pencil) and the ballot paper”, reports Breaking News.
