Here we go again – People told to get Covid booster ahead of summer pause to vaccine programme

Health service executives are urging those eligible for the spring Covid-19 booster to do so, reports RTE.

Immunization programs at most HSE centers will be suspended for the summer months from tomorrow

However, those who need a booster can still get one from their GP or selected pharmacy.

People eligible for Spring Booster are those over 70 years of age or those with weakened immune systems.

HSE Chief Clinical Officer Dr Colm Henry has said the conclusion of the spring campaign ensures that those most at risk of serious illness due to Covid-19 will receive the recommended minimum three-month break before qualifying for the autumn/winter booster.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, he said: “We’re in a much more robust position now in Ireland, thanks to a huge uptake. We’re the country with the highest level of primary vaccination uptake in Europe at 96.5% of the eligible adult population. That has enabled us to have the kind of protection we have.”

Regarding the new form of Covid-19, Dr Henry said Ireland has a strong surveillance system.

“We pool our information from other European countries. We’re constantly looking at trends at new variants, but we’re in a much more robust position than we were when you go back only a short number of years ago, when we had no population immunity either from that or from natural infection,” he said, reports RTE.
