Four individuals, including an active garda, remain in custody this afternoon as officers continue inquiries into suspected corruption, organised crime activity and the disappearance of a substantial quantity of drugs from a garda station last year.
The investigation was launched after gardaí in the eastern region seized more than €100,000 worth of drugs and detained a suspect, reports RTE.
When detectives attempted to present the seized items to the suspect during questioning, they found that the drugs had vanished.
They have not been located since, reports RTE.
Officers from the eastern region, assisted by An Garda Síochána’s Anti-Corruption Unit, initiated a criminal probe and arrested the serving garda yesterday morning.
He is being held under organised crime legislation, which permits questioning for a period of up to seven days, reports RTE.
Five additional individuals were detained by the Garda Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau.
Three of them — two men in their 30s and 40s, and a woman in her 30s — remain in custody for further questioning, reports RTE.
Two others were released without charge last night.
A file will now be prepared for submission to the Director of Public Prosecutions, reports RTE.
The inquiry has centred on the actions of criminal groups operating in the east and southeast of the country and the unexplained disappearance of the drugs from the garda station.
