Ireland may soon get extreme abortion laws as 12 weeks may get extended

According to Taoiseach Simon Harris, the government would take the review’s recommendations into account when drafting legislation pertaining to abortion, reports RTE.

He informed the Dáil during Leaders’ Questions that Health Minister Stephen Donnelly will meet “shortly” with the Cabinet Committee on Health.

It came after Social Democrats’ leader Holly Cairns urged the government to implement the review’s recommendations.

She said that serious issues with the law had been brought to light by an RTÉ Investigates show on abortion services, reports RTE.

The Termination of Pregnancy Act made it very plain, according to Ms. Cairns, that an operational review would be conducted.

Mr. Harris expressed awareness that some voters who supported the removal of the eighth amendment did so because of the limitations imposed by the law.

He said, though, that he was aware the law also had a review clause, reports RTE.
