Irish language activist and Nigerian native, Ola Majekodunmi gets new word added to Irish language to describe “people of colour”

Lagos native, Ola Majekodunmi, described as an Irish radio presenter, Irish language activist, and film-maker in Wikipedia was interviewed on RTE Ray Darcy radio show this week about her Irish language activism.

According to RTE, Ms Majekodunmi told Ray Darcy she sent an email to the Irish language Terminology Committee (An Coiste Téarmaíochta) about the terms in use for people of colour. Daoine gorm is the traditional term.

Her suggestion “duine de dhath” for person of colour was accepted and has since been officially added to the Irish language dictionary.

Daoine gorm is the traditional term but now Irish people can choose which term is best to use.
