Irish tax payers paid private companies €172 million in 2020 to house asylum seekers who await Asylum decisions




Green Party Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth Roderic O’Gorman has provided figures showing €172 million has been paid out to private companies to house asylum seekers waiting for asylum decisions to stay in Ireland reports Breakingnews.ie

That’s a 43% increase in asylum seeker accommodation costs over 2019 despite asylum applications falling during 2020 due to Covid-19.

Three companies received over €8 million each for the first 10 months of 2020. There are 32 companies across Ireland providing accommodation to asylum seekers from around the World awaiting decisions on their applications.

In the newly published figures, €1.3 million was paid to so-called “Non Government Organisations” (NGO) to assist asylum seekers.

During 2019 and 2020 an additional seven new asylum centres were opened around Ireland.
