I’ve deported 34 people in the past week: Jim O’Callaghan says he intends to continue his approach to deportations

The Minister for Justice has said he intends to continue his approach to deporting non-Irish nationals who commit serious criminal offences in the State, speaking the day after 34 men were removed from the country.

Jim O’Callaghan was speaking at Dublin Airport on Monday, where he was present for the launch of upgraded eGate facilities, the day after 22 Polish and 12 Lithuanian nationals were deported on Sunday, 24 May, reports Breaking News.

“If you come to Ireland and you’re here as a guest and you commit a serious criminal offence, you know it’s my intention that you should be removed,” Mr O’Callaghan said, reports Breaking News.

He said he was “taking a very serious approach in response to people who have come to Ireland and have committed serious criminal offences” and would continue to do so, reports Breaking News.

He doubled down on his commitment to deport those convicted of serious crime, saying he wanted to “emphasise clearly” that he had implemented a new policy and that further deportations of EU citizens who commit serious crimes in Ireland would follow.

The new eGate facilities launched at Dublin Airport are designed to speed up passenger processing and improve border management, reports Breaking News.
