Kurdish troops, supported by allied airstrikes, have beaten back ISIS forces in the contested city of Kobani.
Heavy ISIS mortar fire hit the Syrian side of the border crossing with Turkey. This narrow corridor is the only avenue left open to the Kurdish troops for resupply and possible civilian escape, should Kobani fall.
ISIS pushed hard from the east before being repulsed.
About 12,000 civilians remain in and around Kobani. These people face savage retaliation if ISIS take the city, and certain death should their escape route into Turkey be cutoff.
