At a speech at the UK’s Liberal Democrat party conference, leading EU Parliament member Guy Verhofstadt was met with thunderous applause after he proclaimed the end of the nation-state and declared the future will be based on the interactions of empires.

“In the world order of tomorrow, the world order of tomorrow is not a world order based on nation states or countries, it’s a world order that is based on Empires, China is not a nation, it’s a civilisation.

The former Belgian Prime Minister appeared to be calling for the EU to develop into a fully-fledged superstate such as China, Russia or the United States.

In the past the bombastic leader of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe in the European Parliament has demanded that EU member states surrender more sovereignty and powers to the unelected bureaucracy of Brussels in order to avoid future difficulties.

Under the new leadership of Jo Swinson, the party’s new policy on Brexit is to simply dismiss the largest democratic vote in British history should the Lib Dems become a majority partner in government.

This has been condemned as profoundly anti-democratic, as the party’s leader has made in clear that they would not even hold a second referendum should they gain enough seats to form a government and would instead revoke Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty without a vote.

This has angered some in the party as well as other Remainers who fear the consequences of such a course of action.

However, the chances of the Liberal Democrats winning enough seats in Parliament or even becoming just majority partners in a British government in the near to distant future is considered remote at best.
