Leo Varadkar confirms anyone can travel to Belfast and down through the Republic despite the rest of us being county-bound from St Stephen’s Day

The Tanaiste Leo Varadkar was interviewed on last night’s PrimeTime about the new Level 5 lockdown.

The former Taoiseach said that the government was told by Dr Tony a Holohan that the virus has exponentially expanded since the last lockdown and that the government needed to act with a new lockdown immediately after Christmas Day rather than January 6th.

Varadkar said that people could still fly into Belfast and drive down through the border into the Republic and could go anywhere they wanted, if they’re not Irish citizens. Gardai will be on the roads but there will be no roadblocks.

However, gardai will have no powers to police where people go who aren’t Irish citizens. Ironically people who live in the Republic will only legally be allowed to travel within their own county after St Stephen’s Day.
