A man who claimed to be Timmothy Pitzen, who disappeared at the age of 6 in 2011, has been sentenced to two years in prison for aggravated identity theft, according to federal prosecutors.
Brian Michael Rini, 24, of Medina, Ohio, was indicted by a grand jury on April 18, 2019. He pleaded guilty in January 2020 and has been sentenced in the US District Court in Cincinnati.
The case began in April 2019 when police responded to reports that a man was acting suspiciously in a neighborhood in Newport, Kentucky, South Ohio District Attorney Ben Glassman, CNN reports.
When the police arrived, Rini told them that he was Timmothy and that he escaped the kidnappers as a sex trafficking victim, Glassman said. DNA test samples later showed that Rini wasn’t the boy and the criminal process began.
Authorities say that Timmothy Pitzen remains missing.
