More than 21,000 tip-offs last year have contributed to savings of about €505m in welfare fraud and overpayments last year.
The Gardai have been involved in the department’s special investigation unit for the first time in 2014.
The number of tip-offs has risen dramatically, from just under one thousand before the financial crisis, to more than 21,000 throughout last year.
