Mary Robinson accused of hypocrisy over alleged relationship with UAE leadership

Former President Mary Robinson is still facing accusations of gross hypocrisy over her alleged relationship with the leadership of the United Arab Emirates.

The first female President of Ireland has said that she is only friends with Princess Haya bint Hussein of the UAE at an ICTU Bienniale conference in Dublin on climate change. Princess Haya is the daughter of King Hussein of Jordan with his third wife and half-sister Queen Alia.

Despite still being married to the ruler of Dubai, Haya fled the Middle East and lives in exile in London.

Robinson claims she has counselled Haya as a friend and has sought to distance herself from the leadership of the UAE who impose sharia law on their country which sees women denied many basic human and civil rights.

Homosexuality is also criminalised in the country with consensual sodomy being punishable with up to 10 years in prison.

All these factors lead to some uncomfortable questions about the relationship between the supposed human rights advocate and a regime known for its opulent oil wealth and its disgraceful human rights record.
