Migrants in court in connection of €620,000 drugs seized in Shannon Airport

A Bulgarian man and woman appeared before Ennis District Court on Wednesday in connection with the seizure of suspected herbal cannabis valued at approximately €620,000 at Shannon Airport earlier in the week.

Yavor Kostov, aged 30, and Renata Baeva, aged 40, both with addresses at Stara Zagora in Bulgaria, sat together in the custody suite of the court and held hands as a Bulgarian interpreter relayed the proceedings to them, reports Breaking News.

The pair were arrested on Monday by gardaí attached to the Clare Divisional Drugs Unit after Revenue officers at Shannon Airport intercepted approximately 31 kilograms of suspected herbal cannabis as part of a joint operation between Revenue and An Garda Síochána.

Both were detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996 at a Garda station in the Clare-Tipperary Division before being charged and brought before the court, reports Breaking News.

Kostov and Baeva were each charged with possession of cannabis at Shannon Airport on 11 May for the purpose of selling or supplying it, contrary to Section 15 of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977, and with simple possession of cannabis contrary to Section 3 of the same Act.

The seized drugs were sent to Forensic Science Ireland for analysis, and gardaí confirmed that investigations are ongoing. Both accused were remanded in custody, reports Breaking News.
