Mixed reactions to gardai being allowed wear body cameras while on duty

There’s been mixed reactions to the prospect that gardai will soon be armed with body cameras on their uniform that will see footage being used as evidence in a court of law.

Some people are saying that it’s very “big brother”, while others are saying that it’s needed for the public’s good and that garda mismanagement or possibly garda brutality can no longer occur.

New legislation will enable Gardai to wear body cameras while on duty, it has emerged today.

The Garda Síochána Digital Recording Bill will also allow on-duty gardaí to use other electronic devices, such as phones, camcorders, laptops, and drones for recording and surveillance purposes.

The new legislation is likely to become law by 2022.
