Munich attack update: Eight people now confirmed dead

The latest reports say that eight people are confirmed fatalities after a shooting incident in the German city of Munich this evening.

Up to three gunmen opened fire inside a shopping gallery in the city and its surrounding areas just before 6pm local time.

All public transport was immediately halted and public were advised to stay indoors and avoid public areas while police forces secure the area, as the three suspected gunmen are still at large.

If terror links are confirmed, this would be the third attack in mainland Europe in the last two weeks. It follows a deadly rampage in the French city of Nice, where 84 people were killed when a lone assailant driving a truck drove through crowds gathered to celebrate Bastille Day. A few days later, a man attacked passengers with an axe inside a train in German, seriously injuring three before being shot dead by police.
