According to figures recently published by the Department of the Environment it is understood that between mid-February and the beginning of May, over 65,911 people registered to vote.
Figures suggest that majority of those who registered live in Dublin and adjoining counties standing at a massive 35,669 or 54%. The surge in people registering comes ahead of the upcoming marriage equality referendum with many people hoping to vote in favor or against the upcoming bill.
The quoted figures follow the addition of 40,000 new voters to the electoral register following a youth and student-focussed voter registration drive in November last year.
