Noonan: “New rent control laws can be quickly enforced”

The Finance Minister Michael Noonan has claimed that proposed new laws that would see landlords being unable to increase rent prices on vulnerable tenants, can be quickly passed and enforced.

The news of the urgent need to pass the new legislation has come after a number of reports have suggested that a vast majority of landlords are already increasing rent before the new regulations have come into operation. Mr Noonan has said under the Government’s new housing legislation, any proposed increases will only be allowed to happen every two years.

However Mr Noonan has also claimed tenants will be covered under other laws. Mr Noonan told reporters: “Alan Kelly will be able to do these things under law…He will be able to make legal arrangements to prevent (that practice) happening.”
