Poland’s ruling nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party has easily won the country’s general election with 45.16 percent of the vote, which is enough for an absolute parliamentary majority.
The populist, Eurosceptic party known for its socially conservative stances and for butting heads with Brussels.
Of the 460 Polish parliaments lower house, the PiS would take 239 seats, giving it an absolute majority while the Civic Coalition have attained 131, the Left 46, the Polish Coalition 30 and Confederation 13 seats. The German minority in the country also has one seat in the parliament.
The Polish government has been locked in a dispute with the European Commission since enacting sweeping reforms to the country’s court system which Brussels alleges infringes on the independence of the judiciary and violates the country’s constitution.
The outright refusal to accept even a single migrant or asylum seeker from outside of Europe has also led to the EU threatening Poland with sanctions.
