Proper Christmas? Irish households may have to go without turkey this Christmas, as major shortage looms due to dispute

Just as things seemed to be getting on track for Christmas, at least to some extent, after December 1st, Ireland’s families around the country may have to think twice about what they’ll actually have for their Christmas dinner this year.

2020 is turning out to be annus horribilis for many reasons, and those looking forward to a bit of turkey with all the trimmings at Christmas might need to rethink their menu choice.

Local authorities and Ireland’s Food Safety Authority are currently deadlocked over a €1m funding allowance for veterinary officials tasked with certifying abattoirs, which means that if the money isn’t forthcoming, these slaughtering facilities wouldn’t be greenlighted, and no turkeys could be processed.

Stick with lamb this Christmas, just in case.
