Ireland has had one of the longest Covid-19 lockdowns in the world. We have had one of the wettest, dullest years.
All age groups have been waiting for May 2021 in great anticipation of better weather to socialise outside but that didn’t materialise.
Now, when the Irish finally get one single weekend of sunshine, authoritarian politicians, media, gardai and heath officials are out calling for more lockdowns, more legislation and more reasons to hand out fines. Nearly all media outlets both broadcast and print are running with the “litter” and “not drinking alcohol in public” narrative.
They make loose connections with Covid-19 but many on social media are beginning to question their motives.
Why are the politicians, the media, the gardai and the heath officials calling for bans on socialising outdoors based on “litter” and “drinking outdoors”? Is this really what they are concerned about or are they simply authoritarians?
Social media comments are increasingly pointing to a more sinister development of authoritarian control in Ireland:
