Racist abuse and freezing cold carriages are part of 16,000 complaints made to Irish Rail

Customer complaints to Irish Rail last year included carriages resembling refrigerators, racial taunts, having to stand after purchasing first class tickets, and being advised to enjoy your ride on a crowded train, reports Breaking News.

In 2023, the train operator received over 16,000 complaints, with over half of them pertaining to onboard problems and service disruptions.

Irish Rail said that, out of the approximately 1,300 complaints received each month, 11 were related to racism, 521 to anti-social conduct, and 102 to accessibility, which included complaints from those with impairments, reports Breaking News.

A example of complaints from customers describes a party of travellers who arrived in County Offaly aboard a train only to find themselves stranded because the doors would not open.

The passenger said: “We pressed the green button, and it did not open. We then made our way to the next exit at the other end of the train, which had no green light illuminated,” reports Breaking News.

“We tried pressing the button and the door would not open. The train then proceeded to depart again, [it] was stopped at Tullamore for no more than one minute. As a result, we are now on our way to Portarlington,” they added, reports Breaking News.
