Registered Charity community hospital in Clare leaves patient in complete isolation for five days longer than necessary, Lunch served beside uncovered urinal, poor infection control, disrespectful staff, HIQA report finds

The Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) has released a disturbing inspection report on what they found at a Community Hospital and hospice in Count Clare.

Cahercalla Community Hospital and Hospice was described by HIQA as “Chaotic and disorganised” in their response to a Covid-19 outbreak in late January this year reports Breakingnews.ie

Serious issues such as “poor infection control” and “institutional practices” were observed at the nursing home.

One patient in isolation told HIQA inspectors that they were waiting to return to their usual room, but staff were too busy to organise this. However, HIQA inspectors noted that on the same day, there was an extra staff member on duty.

No evidence of clinical monitoring or nursing supervision was found for patients with complex health care needs associated with Covid-19.

HIQA also observed staff speaking to patients in a disrespectful and abrupt manner. HIQA Inspectors also observed a resident having lunch with an uncovered urinal sitting on the windowsill beside the bed table holding their lunch tray.”

It’s worth noting that staff at the community hospital would have been aware that HIQA were onsite for an inspection.

The Cahercalla home website states “providing state-of-the-art quality nursing and facilities met with a truly personal ethic that you can see and feel.”
