An ex-Army captain in Brazil has pulled off an amazing victory and won Brazil’s presidential election.

Right-wing politician Jair Bolsonaro has won at least 56% of the votes in the run-off election beating his left-wing opponent Fernando Haddad by at least 12%.

Mr Bolsonaro’s surge in popularity was brought on by rejection of the leftist PT that ran Brazil for 13 of the last 15 years and was ousted two years ago in the midst of a deep recession and political graft scandal.

The 63-yr-old seven-time congressman has said he’ll smash the crime epidemic in Brazilian cities by granting police more power to shoot criminals. He’s also said that he’s in favour of private gun ownership for people to protect themselves in their property.

The president-elect has vowed to “change Brazil’s destiny together” and is just the latest right wing politician to win an election over the past two years.
