As the prospect of a dramatic global economic downturn haunts the minds of Western leaders while inflation continues to inflict an ever more painful sting on their citizens support for the continuation of the Ukraine war is starting to wane.

Regardless of the relentless Western media propaganda drive, the war is not going in favour of Ukraine while Russia continues to make gains in the east of the country and while delivering ever more devastating blows against the Ukrainian military Western weapons cannot turn the tide.

Sanctions against Russia have had little effect on the day-to-day life of Russian citizens while Western citizens are feeling genuine pain from the increasing cost of energy and its knock-on effects.

Russia, for its part, has sold oil to the West worth $97 bn, enough to bankroll its Ukraine war and draw the sting of sanctions from its economy. By the end of the year, Moscow will have netted $285 bn from its energy sales compared with $236 bn in 2021 DEBKAfile reports.

Supplies of Western weapons to Ukraine have begun to slow and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, commented: “Ukraine alone should decide whether or not to accept any territorial concessions towards Russia with a view to ending the war.”

Ukrainian President Zelensky, seemingly ever more detached from reality however has insisted all territory including Crimea will be regained from Russia, an impossibility.

French President Macron has acknowledged reality more bluntly and echoed former U.S Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, who drafted the Paris Peace Accords, who stated that Kiev will have to accept loss of territory to Russia in exchange for peace.
