Spain’s government controversially votes to legalise euthanasia

The Spanish government have voted to pass a law allowing assisted suicide and euthanasia of patients who have what are described as incurable diseases or intolerable permanent conditions.

The law, approved by the Spanish left coalition government and several other parties, was passed with 198-138 votes. Conservative People’s Party and right-wing Vox Party vote “No” and said that they respect life.

The law will now continue on its legislative path and face a vote in the Senate, where it is also expected to be passed. According to the law approved by the House of Commons, it will only come into force three months after its publication in the Official Journal.

Many people are against the new law stating that it completely devalues life itself and that people should get support when they most need it.
