The Tánaiste and Labour Party TD Joan Burton says she and the rest of the Labour Party are currently on high alert for an early General Election.

Ms Burton made her comments after held a number of meetings with the party’s National Executive and General Council over the weekend. However Ms Burton did not reveal when she thought the General Election would be, but instead said the Labour Party are currently planning its manifesto.

Ms Burton told reporters: “Well, I had an all-day meeting of the National Executive of the Labour Party and the General Council of the Labour Party on Saturday bringing people from every constituency in Ireland and finalising our preparations in relation to areas like the manifesto.” “So we are certainly on a high level of alert and readiness.”

The news comes after a number of media outlets reported over the weekend that the next general election could be held as soon as January.
